This month, In The Spirit focuses on celebrating the birthday of one of the most important Americans in our history, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our country faces many hurdles and challenges today that Dr. King fought against during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Even the legacy of his federal holiday has been questioned.
But, what can't be questioned was commitment to and impact on our lives even in this day. Many of our children are given the educational opportunity of integrated schools, more equal housing options, and potential for more employment success.
You'll see in this month's issue that I, being in the military, was in a very different place than Dr. King. My world was structured and unquestioning, while he was working hard to tear down the structure that held Blacks and other people back. Oppose the American institutions and systems that were specifically set in place to keep so many disenfranchised. However, after my time in the military, when I was truly able to comprehend his impact on the lives of millions, he became one of the most important images I could bring to the American people through large-scale public art projects as well as my gallery works. I hope you enjoy this tribute to Dr. King and his legacy.
Happy Birthday, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
